The Stars are Indifferent to Astronomy

Don’t let the heavy title fool you. I can already picture myself driving around with the windows down in nice weather and Nada Surf’s new album playing in the background. Even though the band formed in New York, it sounds more like new California surf rock.

Heavy on the guitar riffs and sentimental insights, Nada Surf’s upbeat music is enjoyable for sure. Just don’t expect a deep, thought-provoking experience. It’s all about upbeat catchiness with these guys, like the popular “Jules and Jim.” Even when a song slows down a bit, it still is never that sad (see “When I Was Young”). My favorites on the album would have to be “Looking Through,” for its chorus that will have you singing by the end, and “Let the Fight Do the Fighting,” for it’s more soft and soothing approach.

This kind of music is something I like to consider alternative, easy listening music. Yes, it’s alternative, but it’s still something you can throw on and listen to all the way through while you go about your day. The tempo doesn’t change much and you probably won’t notice when it ends.

Grade: C+

Recommended Songs: “Looking Through” and “Let the Fight Do the Fighting
