White ignites Cyclones in win against rival Iowa

It took 2:05 of game time for Iowa State to get on the scoreboard, but when it did, the 14,356 fans in attendance let their team hear it.

Two dunks and a banked-in jumper from forward Royce White later, the Cyclones (7-3) were off and running, en route to an 86-76 victory against Iowa.

“[White] showed who he is,” said ISU coach Fred Hoiberg. “He was doing a little bit of everything. You see how explosive he is when he takes off.”

The Cyclones got their third straight and fourth of five against the Hawkeyes (5-5) on the strength of White’s impressive first half. The sophomore had 14 points on 7-7 shooting and five rebounds in the first half alone.

White said he was simply taking what the defense gave him to start the game.

“My teammates have confidence in me, the coaching staff has confidence in me,” White said. “They were really overplaying me. [It] was just noticing that and taking advantage.”

His teammates certainly enjoyed the fast start. Be it chest bumps or high-fives, his teammates fed off the energy created by the dunks. The quick start created confidence which translated to the defensive end as well.

“It just sets the tone for the whole game,” said guard Scott Christopherson. “And defensively [as well]. We might’ve had our best half of basketball, especially in the first half, defensively.

“We were everywhere. That’s really what we’ve been trying to get to, and it was good to see how good we can be when we’re playing defense like that.”

White attributed the solid half of basketball to game experience as a team. With this being only the team’s 10th game in action, he said they’ve just needed time to grow as a unit.

“Every game we’ve had is a growing experience for us, being a new team together,” White said. “With every loss and every win, every game we just continue to grow.”

After the first half, however, Iowa changed up its scheme defensively, adding more full court pressure, essentially removing White from the equation.

The Hawkeyes had shown some pressure in the first half, but really committed to it in the second. Hoiberg said he thought his team dealt with it OK in the first half, but maybe let it affect them too much in the second half.

“I thought [in the] first half we did a great job with it,” Hoiberg said. “In the second half, we slowed it down. We didn’t want to get in a running match and continue to turn the ball over when they picked up the pressure.

“It’s a good thing we had a comfortable lead.”

White only attempted one shot in the second half and ended the game with 17 points and eight rebounds on 7-8 shooting. Hoiberg said the amount of shots he took was definitely dictated by what the Iowa defense was doing and not a schematic change from the ISU offense.

Where White wasn’t in the second half, a few other Cyclones were. Christopherson — who had 30 points against Iowa in Iowa City last season — found his groove offensively, adding 16 points.

Perhaps most notably — and maybe surprisingly — was the play of Bubu Palo, who played 30 minutes and had a career-high 14 points.

Hoiberg said it’s a credit to the depth of his team and the talent he has on the roster that other players can step up in a big way when White — or whoever is hot in a game — gets taken away by the other team.

“That’s the great thing about this team,” Hoiberg said. “We have a lot of different people who can come in and give us quality minutes. Tonight it happened to be Bubu.”
