Cyclones roll Rice in South Padre Invitational

The ISU men’s basketball team remained perfect on its trip to South Padre Island, Texas, rolling past Rice 90-63.

Guard Chris Babb led the way for the Cyclones, knocking down seven 3-pointers en route to 26 points to lead all scorers.

Iowa State (5-1) was up only nine points at the half, but pulled away in the second half, with help off the bench from guard Tyrus McGee. The junior-college transfer totalled 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range.

As a team, the Cyclones shot 47.5 percent from the field in the game, up considerably from the win against Providence on Friday night when they shot 39.2 percent.

For the second straight game, Iowa State also dominated the glass, compiling 46 total rebounds to the Rice’s 31, leading to 11 second-chance points for the Cyclones.

Iowa State also flipped the negative assist-turnover ratio against the Owls, with 14 team assists and 11 turnovers. In Friday’s game against Providence, Iowa State had 11 assists and 12 turnovers.

The Cyclones forced 13 Owl turnovers as well, directly leading to 21 points off those turnovers.

Iowa State comes home to face Northern Iowa on Wednesday. Tipoff against the Panthers is set for 7 p.m.
