Gridiron Picks: Week 3

Isd Sports Staff

Iowa State vs. UConn

Jeremiah Davis: Iowa State — Could be a classic letdown game (see: Texas A&M after the Nebraska win in ’09, Colorado after close Nebraska loss in ’10). But I don’t think Paul Rhoads lets that happen this time.

Jake Calhoun: Iowa State — Wearing white after Labor Day won’t be a problem for the Cyclones, especially since they’re wearing those sweet helmets.

Dan Tracy: Iowa State — All-white uniforms for the Cyclones, all-blue crowd for the Huskies. UConn will give Iowa State problems early, but the Clones hold off the Huskies for a 21-17 win.

Jake Lovett: Iowa State — Careful for a letdown. The Cyclones are 5-7 following a win under Rhoads.

No. 1 Oklahoma vs. No. 5 Florida State

Davis: Oklahoma — Can we start the Sooners to the ACC rumor now, too? No? OK, fine. Oklahoma will show everyone just how much better it is than everyone else.

Calhoun: Oklahoma — This will be a tough test for the Sooners, but Bob Stoops has himself convinced that a win here is an automatic ticket out of the Big 12.

Tracy: Florida State — FSU quarterback E.J. Manuel throws his hat into the Heisman race with a huge game as the ‘Noles knock off No. 1 and give Jimbo Fisher the program’s biggest win post-Bowden.

Lovett: Oklahoma — OU will outclass the ‘Noles on the field, just like its fans did off it this week.

Washington vs. No. 10 Nebraska

Davis: Nebraska — I’m picking Nebraska because the ‘Huskers are a good team, not because an awful NFL team couldn’t get a mediocre quarterback.

Calhoun: Nebraska — I’m only picking against my beloved Huskies because I’m still really upset that the Seattle Seahawks couldn’t get Jake Locker.

Tracy: Nebraska — Blackshirt defense > Red-faced coach > Locker-less Huskies

Lovett: Nebraska — Big Red fans best hope this game is a lot more October and a lot less December.

No. 17 Ohio State vs. Miami (FL)

Davis: Miami — In a battle of “What rule can I break?” the Hurricanes pull the upset. Just wasn’t that impressed with Ohio State last week. Barely squeaking by Toledo? Upset city in Miami.

Calhoun: Ohio State — If LeBron James was looking for a ring, he could have just bought one from one of the OSU players.

Tracy: Miami — Maybe Miami will get a scholarship or two back from the NCAA if they win … Nope, they’re still screwed.

Lovett: Ohio State — I bet these kids can fund some wild after-parties.

No. 24 Texas vs. UCLA

Davis: UCLA — Has using multiple QBs ever worked? Ever? Didn’t think so.

Calhoun: Texas — Texas is like the mean girl in high school: She drives everyone away and then sobs wondering why nobody likes her.

Tracy: Texas — Mack Brown figured it out. Just get another McCoy-Shipley combination on offense. Longhorns win big.

Lovett: UCLA — Case Keenum on a bad knee got 310 and 2 TD against the Bruins. Fuse the Texas QBs together and they’re not Case Keenum on a bad knee.

Tennessee vs. No. 16 Florida

Davis: Florida — This matchup used to mean something.

Calhoun: Florida — Donde esta Lane Kiffin?

Tracy: Florida — Don’t be deceived by Florida’s nation-leading 1.5 points per game allowed. Volunteers QB Tyler Bray will keep this game close but the Gators prevail in a close one.

Lovett: Florida — The Gators are giving up 1.5 points per game. My bet is the Vols hit the over on that … but not by much.

Pittsburgh vs. Iowa

Davis: Iowa — Flipped a coin on this one. Just don’t think Iowa loses two straight, especially being in Iowa City.

Calhoun: Iowa — The Hawkeyes’ running attack would be a lot stronger if Brandon Wegher wasn’t on diaper duty.

Tracy: Iowa — If the Hawkeyes lose this one, the Eastern side of the state will self-destruct.

Lovett: Iowa — Two reasons: 1) No way the Hawks lose after last week. 2) Everybody else picked Iowa. No way I was losing a game picking Pitt.
