Three Ames residents were injured in a single-car accident Wednesday night, two of them critically.

Lt. Tom Shelton of the Ames Police Department said the car was traveling eastbound on Mortensen Parkway when it lost control and went off the road at about 10:15 p.m., near the intersection of Mortensen and Big Bluestem Court.

One of the passengers was thrown from the car. A preliminary report provided by Cmdr. Jim Robinson said that the car struck a curb and overturned.

The accident shut down Mortensen Parkway for several hours.

Justin Michael Grall, 18, of Ames, was the driver of the vehicle, police said. He and a passenger, Zachary Monte Toresdahl, 18, also of Ames, were both transported from the scene by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. They both remain in critical condition.

A third passenger, Tyler Bradley Grieser, 18, of Ames, suffered minor injuries and fled the scene. He later turned himself in and was treated at Mary Greeley Medical Center.
