Pride week’s drag show inspires acceptance

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Ally Alliance group hosted a drag show Wednesday at the Memorial Union for Pride Week.

The evening began with Mike Aguilar, senior in psychology and a former president of the LGBTAA, leading the night as the emcee.

“The [LGBTAA] was a huge part of my life, and they have helped make me what I am,” Aguilar said.

“This is just a small way for me to give back to the [LGBTAA]. I want this to somehow repay them for everything they have given me, by offering my talents for the night.”

Aguilar hopes the drag show will enlighten the audience, for people to see the fun and love in the performers; the true reason behind the drag show.

“There has been a very positive reception towards pride week, and it gets bigger and stronger every year,” Aguilar said.

Elizabeth Fowler, junior in elementary education, was one of the many performers of the evening.

“I’ve always liked dressing up in both genders, and this night nobody can judge,” Fowler said.

Fowler said she hopes a lot of stereotypes can be dropped, and that people can see anybody can dress whichever way they choose, and that it’s OK.

Charles Poulson, also a drag performer and sophomore in graphic design, said this was an impulsive decision on a whim, but does not regret it at all.

“It’s for fun, and it’s for the [LGBTAA]. It’s OK and it’s not a big deal, it’s OK to be proud about yourself, even outside of pride week, that’s the point,” Poulson said.

The event last for longer than an hour and a half and had many inspirational aspects including a rendition of “You Gotta Be” by one of the drag queens.

“We had a friend performing in it, and it was incredible. they have more confidence then I will ever have, and it just radiates,” said Liz Wellenborg, sophomore in graphic design.

Dessa Harvey, junior in graphic design, was also one of the many crowd members who felt inspired after the show.

“I was so inspired by the community. They are all so supportive and loving. It made me smile watching them on stage,” Harvey said.
