Cyclone Cinema funds might be reallocated for other entertainment
March 1, 2011
Returning funds from the Cyclone Cinema project and putting them toward a project to bring big name entertainment to Iowa State is part of two bills that will be voted on at the Government of the Student Body meeting Wednesday.
The first bill, “Modifying the Cyclone Cinema Proposal,” seeks to return $346,000 that had been set aside for the Cyclone Cinema to the Investment Account and the Capital Project Account.
Derek Grygiel, GSB engineering senator and senior in chemical engineering, said the project can no longer move forward because of the high costs of rent and building renovations. He said GSB was originally expecting rent to be approximately $2,500 per month.
“Over the course of the summer, the potential rent kept being raised until it was out of an affordable range,” Grygiel said. “There were also a lot of building improvements that needed to be made that we were expected to pay for that we hadn’t budgeted.”
Anthony Maly, finance director and senior in political science, said GSB had budgeted approximately $185,000 for one-time start up fees for the project, but after some recalculations, that amount jumped to $250,000.
Part of the $346,000 that was set aside will potentially go toward a new project led by the Student Union Board that will increase entertainment options for ISU students.
The Featured Programs for Students bill will allocate $200,000 to a project that will bring big name entertainment to Iowa State at reduced ticket prices for students.
“The intention is to keep the fund’s original purpose of providing greater entertainment opportunities for students,” Maly said in a news release.
MaryBeth Konkowski, SUB president and junior in communication studies, said the project will save students from having to travel long distances to see some of their favorite acts.
“I think this is a great opportunity for SUB and Iowa State as a whole,” Konkowski said. “It would allow students to see big name acts right here on campus rather than driving an hour or two to see them.”
The GSB meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union.
