Welcome to Editor’s Note
October 6, 2010
I’m Jessie, the Daily’s editor in chief. Welcome to Editor’s Note, my Daily blog. I’ve tried this blogging thing several times before — probably most successfully when I was in high school and had a Xanga, with plenty of time to think and not much to distract me.
Now? Well, I’m writing this introductory post as we put the paper to bed. As I wait to OK the pages and send them to the printer — that’s part of my job — I write little bits, here and there.
I’ll keep this post limited to a short history of my life at the Daily. I started as an opinion columnist, my freshman year. I handed in my application before I even started classes. My first column was about the glamorization of teen pregnancy. I loved my job, and I was quickly promoted to assistant opinion editor. When Ryan Frederick, the opinion editor at the time, graduated in December, I was promoted to opinion editor for the second semester of my freshman year.
Last year, as a sophomore, I covered the administration beat as a news reporter, writing stories like this one about the regents’ approval of a six percent tuition hike. During the second semester, I was also a news editor and member of the editorial board.
And now, after being selected by the Iowa State Daily Publication Board last spring, I’m the editor in chief. It’s what I’ve dreamed of from the start, and I have a lot of goals for this year. I’ll get into those in another post, sometime soon.
For now, this is me — at least, in Daily terms. I look forward to communicating with you all through this blog. Tell me what you want to hear about, what you’re sick of, what you disagree with and what you love. I want to hear from you, and I hope by giving you insights into my life as an ISU student and as the Daily’s editor in chief, you’ll have a greater understanding of our perspective here.
