Cyclones sweep UW-Milwaukee in home opener

The ISU volleyball team’s inaugural regular season match at Ames High School came off without a hitch.

The Cyclones easily took down the UW-Milwaukee Panthers in a quick 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-18) sweep.

Sophomore middle blocker Jamie Straube posted a career day for the No. 12 Cyclones (2-1), as she consistently blew away a much undersized Panther team at the net.

Straube notched career highs with 15 kills and a .545 hitting percentage while also adding a match-high four blocks.

To go along with Straube’s efficiency were junior Kelsey Peterson, who added added eight kills on a .700 hitting percentage, and senior Victoria Henson, who did not have a single attack error on her 21 swings while knocking down 10 kills on a .476 clip.

A big part of the solid hitting match was setter Alison Landwehr, who tallied 38 assists in the three-set match.

The Iowa State offense hit an even .400 as a whole, making for the first time that the team has hit that plateau in 52 matches.

Despite outblocking the Cyclones 7.0-5.5, the Panthers (2-4) managed to hit just .133 for the match and didn’t have a player with more than seven kills.

The Cyclones will return to Ames High tonight at 6:30, when they face the Bison of North Dakota State (1-2), who beat UW-Milwaukee earlier today in a 5-set thriller.
