Daily chooses new editor-in-chief
April 1, 2010
The Publication Board selected the new Iowa State Daily editors-in-chief for the summer and 2010-11 school year Wednesday night. Anthony Capps, senior in journalism and mass communication, will serve as editor-in-chief from May to August, while Jessie Opoien, junior in journalism and mass communication, will hold the position during the school year.
This year there were four applicants: Capps; Opoien; Stefanie Buhrman, senior in marketing; and Dylan Boyle, junior in journalism and mass communication.
Opoien said she would like to “shift the focus from print to thinking about it as a news organization.”
Capps said having more of a presence on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr is one way to achieve this.
Capps plans to increase recruitment, change the servers on which the newsroom operates and go more online with the news.
A major goal of Opoien is to increase communication and openness with the ISU community.
She would like to improve the Daily’s news and opinion sections, as well as the overall visuals. To do this, Opoien plans to improve the beat systems, where each reporter specializes in a certain area, and have reporters and news editors constantly on call.
“Every other applicant thought of something I forgot in my proposal,” Opoien said, “and I’d love to implement them next year.”
Zach Thompson said he’s learned a lot over the year as editor-in-chief, but he’s relieved to be stepping down.
“This is a huge responsibility and I’m excited,” Opoien said, “but it’s time to get to work already.”
