Iowa State women’s basketball has just signed yet another international player to the squad, this time signing Xiao “Smyle” Zhang, a 6-foot-6 center from China.
The signing of Zhang marks the seventh player on the current Cyclone roster with international playing experience. Zhang has international experience, having represented the Chinese national team and also having played for Beijing Normal University.
While playing for Beijing Normal University, Zhang helped the university win the 2026 Chinese University Basketball Association League (CUBAL) championship, a major accomplishment, given that CUBAL is one of the best basketball leagues in China.
Zhang is a patient post player with great touch around the rim. She looks to become a valuable rim protector for the Cyclones. Zhang has also demonstrated a strong ability to see out of the post and set her teammates up for easy baskets.
The addition of Zhang also gives Iowa State another true post player. As of right now, the only true forwards on the roster are Gift Ezekiel and Tjaša Turnšek, who are both below 6-foot-3. This will give more depth at the forward position for the Cyclones, which will be crucial for this upcoming season.
