Jerome Ward was honored as the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week on Monday.

Ward was a key contributor to the Cyclones’ success at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals last weekend in Cedar Falls, going 4-0 in the team’s four duals. Ward began his dominance with a major decision over Bloomsburg’s Derek Coffey, 14-3, and a decision over Maryland’s Corey Peltier, 7-5.

Ward went on to shock the wrestling world in the semifinal dual against Ohio State, where he defeated the Buckeyes’ Mike Pucillo, the nation’s top-ranked wrestler at 184 pounds, by a decision of 5-3. Ward’s success transferred over to the championship dual against intrastate rival, Iowa, where he defeated Phillip Keddy for the second time this season by a sudden victory decision of 7-5.

Long is now 18-3 overall and 5-2 in dual action this season. Ward is 15-3 overall and 7-0 in dual action this season.

Ward was preceded with the honor by redshirt freshman Andrew Long.

Long, from Creston, became the Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 4 after beating Minnesota’s Zach Sanders by a decision of 8-4 during the Jan. 3 dual meet in Minneapolis, Minn. Sanders, who at the time was ranked third in the nation, was favored in the 125-pound match against Long, but only managed to score four points — all on escapes — as Long managed to pull off the upset.
