FOOTBALL: Kennard Banks suspended from team, will not play in Insight Bowl

Nate Sandell —

The ISU football team announced Friday that senior defensive back Kennard Banks has been suspended for violating the team’s rules.

Banks will be unable to play when the Cyclones take on Minnesota in the Insight Bowl on Dec. 31. The suspension will also end Banks’ two-year career with Iowa State.

The team provided no further details on the specifics of Banks’ suspension.

Banks had been suspended briefly earlier this season for marijuana possession on the morning of Sept. 22. The players were released later that day.

The team announced the players had been suspended on the same day they had turned themselves in. Banks, however, had his suspension lifted the same week, and he was able to play in Iowa State’s game against Army on Sept. 26.

Banks, a native of Boynton Beach, Fla., transferred to the Cyclones in 2008 as a junior from Dodge City Community College. Despite suffering a broken arm in his debut season with Iowa State, Banks appeared in eight games and recorded 18 tackles.

Banks has been a consistent contributor for the Cyclone defense this season, playing in all 12 games. He is ranked seventh on the team in tackles, with 55 — 22 of which were solo tackles. Banks also tallied an interception and a fumble recovery this season.
