HOCKEY: Sun Devils edge Cyclones in shootout

For the second straight game, the Iowa State hockey team played into a shoot out. In the end though, Arizona State out-scored the Cyclones in the shootout the win the game 2-1.

Neither team scored in the first two periods to start out the game. Iowa State nearly scored at the end of the first period with a shot at the buzzer, but the clock had ran out and the goal was not counted.

Arizona State got the scoring started in the third period scoring a goal with seven and a half minutes to play in the game. Iowa State answered back on a Brian Rooney goal with six minutes to play in the game. With seconds left in regulation, Pete Majkozak’s shot hit off the post and the game headed to overtime.

In overtime, both teams locked up into a defensive battle and it remained scoreless to end the game and send it to a shootout.

Iowa State’s Brent Cornelius shot first for the Cyclones and was denied by the Arizona State goalie. Arizona State star player Joe Schweiger shot next and got the puck around Cyclone goalie Erik Hudson. Brian Rooney shot next for the Cyclones and was also denied.

The Sun Devils missed their next shot and put the pressure on Iowa State to make its final shot. Mike Lebler connected on his attempt and forced the Sun Devils to score to end the game. Arizona State went on to score and sent the Cyclones away with a 2-1 loss.

Iowa State will take on Arizona State again on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Tempe, Arizona.
