SPORTS SEASON RECAP: Men’s Basketball

In Greg McDermott’s three-year tenure at Iowa State, there have been few bright spots for the basketball program.

The Cyclones’ 15-17 record may not be encouraging to the fans of the team, but the play of sophomore Craig Brackins certainly was.

Brackins shone throughout the season, getting 20.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, both team highs. The big man carried the Cyclones on his back during the team’s 11-5 stretch through non-conference play, but picked up his play in the conference season when he averaged 21.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.

The team, however, went 4-12 in conference for the second year with McDermott at the helm.

Brackins gave more hope for next season to the Cyclone faithful when he announced last week that he will return for his junior season, deciding to forego the NBA draft for at least one more year. He will be joined by an improved supporting cast including sophomores Lucca Staiger, Diante Garrett, and the surprising Charles Boozer.

The superstar forward was honored after the season as a first team all Big 12 performer, as well as an honorable mention All-American honor.
