The ISU men’s basketball team had a mellow signing day, signing just one newcomer for next season.

Marquis Gilstrap of Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Fla., will join the Cyclones for the 2009-10 season.

The 6-foot-7-inch guard from Covington, Ga., will only have one year of eligibility when he gets to Ames next season.

In his first year at GCCC, Gilstrap is averaging 22.7 points and nine rebounds through four games. GCCC is off to a 3-1 start.

The Cyclones are looking for Gilstrap to be a versatile player who can contribute as both a forward and wing player.

Gilstrap began his collegiate career in 2005-06 playing for Palm Beach Community College, but a broken leg put his college career on hold.

Iowa State only signed one player for next season, but has seven newcomers on this year’s squad. The Cyclones will lose Alex Thompson, Bryan Petersen and Sean Haluska to graduation next season.

Gilstrap attended East Side High School in Covington, which is also the hometown of former Cyclone Kantrail Horton (2000-01).

Scout.com lists Gilstrap as a three-star recruit and Rivals.com said Gilstrap chose Iowa State over Nebraska.
