Season ends in disappointment for ISU gymnastics team
April 13, 2008
The ISU gymnastics team saw its season end Saturday when it failed to finish in the top two at the NCAA Northeast Regional in Happy Valley, Penn. The Cyclones finished with a score of 194.200, which placed them sixth out of six teams.
Georgia won the team title with a score of 197.775, followed by Denver (195.775), Penn State (195.700), Auburn (195.150), Brigham Young (194.325) and Iowa State.
The Cyclones fell behind in the first rotation and were never able to recover. They scored a disappointing 48.200 on floor exercise, but had a couple of bright spots in junior Jasmine Thompson’s 9.825 and sophomore Nikki Dilbert’s 9.800.
In the second rotation, Iowa State scored a 48.650 on the vault. The Cyclones were led by sophomore Megan Barnes with a 9.875 and Dilbert with a 9.800.
Barnes’ vault score was good enough for a third-place finish in the event.
Dilbert led the Cyclones in the all-around competition with a 39.175, which was good enough for seventh place overall. Iowa State’s other all-arounder, Thompson, finished right behind Dilbert in eighth place with a 39.050.
The all-around champion was Georgia’s Tiffany Tolnay, who put up a 39.675.
Halfway through the meet, Iowa State was in fifth place, just ahead of BYU, with a score of 96.850.
In the third rotation, the Cyclones scored a season-high 48.950 on the bars. Four gymnasts scored a 9.800, including junior Ashley Kent, for whom the score was a season-best.
In the final rotation of their season, the Cyclones scored a 48.400 on the balance beam. Jody McKellar saw her sophomore year end on a high note as she hit a career-high 9.825 on beam. Dilbert and Thompson also ended their seasons well with matching 9.800’s.
Iowa State scored a 195.775 at the Big 12 Championships two weeks ago. If the Cyclones could have repeated that performance at regionals they would have tied for second place with Denver.
Georgia and Denver both advanced to the NCAA Championship in Athens, Ga., which start April 24.
