Galvan, Montgomery make NCAA regionals, Lewis only
April 13, 2008
The ISU men’s track and field team was again split up over the weekend, with athletes running in events in Arizona and Iowa.
The sprint team traveled to Arizona State for the Sun Angel Invitational, where it captured a pair of NCAA regional-qualifying times.
Derron Montgomery achieved an NCAA-qualifying time in the 400-meter dash, finishing in sixth place with a time of 47.04 seconds. Washington’s Jordan Boase won the event, setting a meet record with a finish of 44.82 seconds.
In his return to his hometown of Tempe, Ariz., James Galvan grabbed a qualifying time in the 800-meter run, locking up eighth place with a time of 1 minute, 50.36 seconds. Galvan ran the 800 at the NCAA Indoor Championships as well, but this was the junior’s first time to experience the event outdoors this season.
Following up Montgomery’s performance in the 400-meter dash, the junior netted an eighth-place finish in the 200-meter dash. Jared Lewis also placed in the event, ending up in 16th place.
Running in the 100, Lewis had another eighth-place finish for the Cyclones with a time of 10.65 seconds. The junior came up a tenth of a second slower than the regional-qualifying time. Junior Eric Parker also had a high finish for the team, taking ninth in the 110-meter hurdles.
While the sprinters soaked up the warm weather in Arizona, the rest of the team had to battle the cold conditions at the Jim Duncan Invitational in Des Moines, where Saturday’s events were cut short due to the weather.
Running under a sprinkling of snow, several of the distance runners recorded impressive finishes. Zach McFall captured second place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15 minutes, 12.17 seconds. The sophomore was just ahead of third-place finisher and teammate freshman Clayton Carper, who finished 0.15 seconds later. Freshman Daniel Murray ended up in sixth place.
The Cyclones head to Iowa City next weekend for the Iowa Invitational. With only two weeks until the Drake Relays, the Invitational will be the team’s last tune up before the meet.
