Gymnastics team heads to Iowa City looking for sweep against Hawkeyes

The ISU gymnastics team has a chance to complete a season sweep of Iowa in Iowa City on Friday.

Since their first meeting – and the Cyclones’ only win this season – the two teams have gone in opposite directions, with Iowa State losing its last meet and Iowa racking up four straight wins and jumping to No. 19 in the rankings.

“They are going to think, ‘what the heck – we’re ranked way ahead of them, and they beat us,'” said coach Jay Ronayne. “So they’re going to expect to be kicking our butts, and I expect to kick their butts.”

The Cyclones earned a season-high score of 195.125 in their victory over Iowa. The Hawkeyes’ score of 193.8 was one of their lowest of the season.

“We’re just going to go out there like we always do, and if we intimidate them, then we do,” said sophomore Anna Robey.

After the Cyclones’s big win over Iowa, they took a step back with a loss to Minnesota.

Ronayne said the team has spent the week putting in a lot of extra practice on floor exercises, an area in which the Cyclones have been decimated by injuries this year.

“In practice yesterday, we put up the highest scores [on floor exercise] that we’ve gotten all year,” said sophomore Melanie Tham.

Nikki Dilbert, Jasmine Thompson and Katie Sweetin have consistently put up high floor exercise scores all season, but the Cyclones have been looking for more production out of the final two routines.

“Anna [Robey] and Mel [Tham] both had personal-best days [during Tuesday’s practice],” Ronayne said. “We score routines in practice to gauge as to what to expect for the weekend. They scored higher than they ever have – best routines I’ve ever seen them do.”

Robey hit her season high score on floor, 9.675, in the team’s last meeting with the Hawkeyes.

“Our goal for the season has been to attack,” Robey said. “We do the same thing in practice by attacking the routine and putting up a good score.”

The first meeting with Iowa was the only time the Cyclones scored over 195 points this season, but Ronanye said they expect at least that on Friday.

He said that if everyone performs their routines to the level they’re capable of, with nobody falling, then Iowa State should to score 196 or better.

The Cyclones are 1-6 this season and have three road meets remaining before the Big 12 Championships. Iowa is 8-4-1 and has won its last four meets.
