Iowa State gave its best effort against No.1 Georgia on Friday but still came up on the losing end. The Bulldogs defeated the Cyclones 196.750-194.450 in Athens, Ga.

The 194.450 the Cyclones posted is their third-highest score of the season and their highest score on the road.

Additionally, Jasmine Thompson put up her highest road score of the season in front of the most intimidating crowd she will see all year. Over 9,000 fans packed into Stegeman Coliseum to watch the top-ranked team in the country.

The Cyclones’ leading gymnast was Thompson, who scored a 39.125 in the all-around competition. The junior posted team-high scores on floor, beam and bars.

In the first rotation, the Cyclones put up a 48.525 on bars. Thompson led the team with a 9.800 and was complemented by Nikki Dilbert’s 9.725. Georgia took the early lead with a 48.950 on vault.

The Bulldogs showed their dominance when Grace Taylor produced a perfect 10.0 on bars in the second rotation.

Iowa State didn’t back down, though, scoring a 48.750 on vault. Jennifer Salfen scored a team-high 9.825 – her second best score of the season.

Halfway through the meet, the Cyclones were still within striking distance, trailing 97.975-97.275.

The floor exercise also proved to be child’s play for the Cyclones, as they put up a triumphant score of 48.875 – Iowa State’s second best floor routine this season, led by Thompson’s 9.850.

Iowa State struggled in the final rotation on beam and scored just 48.300. The Cyclones still had a couple of bright spots on beam, however, with Thompson posting a 9.825 and Celia Maccani tying a career high with a score of 9.800.

Georgia put up another perfect 10.0 on floor in the final rotation and ultimately pulled away.

Prior to facing Georgia, Iowa State traveled to Lincoln to face No. 15 Nebraska. For the second time this season, Iowa State lost to the Cornhuskers, this time 196.175-194.150.

In that meet, the Cyclones put up low scores in the first three rotations before they finally stepped up on the beam in the final rotation. They posted a season-best 49.950, but it wasn’t enough to erase the lead Nebraska had built.

Dilbert was the top all-around performer for Iowa State with a 38.575. Nebraska’s Emily Parsons won the all-around title with a score of 39.525.

The Cyclones will next travel to Norman, Okla., for the Big 12 Championships. Iowa State is 0-4 against Big 12 opponents this season, but will look to play spoiler on Saturday.
