Iowa State’s distance medley relay team provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships as the men’s track team participated in the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame on Friday.

The relay team of Jayden Russ, Derron Montgomery, James Galvan, and Hillary Bor finished sixth with a time of 9 minutes, 45.39 seconds, almost four seconds under the qualifying time of 9:49.20. Iowa State saw a 16-second improvement from their time at last week’s Big 12 championship.

Notre Dame won the distance medley, coming up less than a second short of the automatic qualifying time.

Brandon Rooney finished shy of the qualifying time in the mile run, crossing the finish line in 4 minutes, 8.82 seconds and placing 14th.

Senior Jayden Russ also ran in the mile, finishing two spots behind Rooney in 16th place.

The Cyclones also hosted a last-chance qualifying meet this weekend, but only a few runners participated while the rest of the team prepares for the outdoor season.

Daniel Fadgen notched a career-best time in the mile run, finishing fourth with a time of 4:08.27. Fadgen’s 8:34.71 in the 3,000-meter run was also a career best, allowing him to finish second in the event. David Lantz also ran in the mile and placed 10th.

Newcomer Luke Pinkelman earned a career-high score in the shot put, throwing 56 feet, 11.50 inches.

Galvan already recorded a provisionally qualifying time in the 800-meter run with his time of 1:48.36, which he set back in January.

Athletes with provisionally qualifying times must wait until the NCAA makes the final selections for the championship to see if they earn a spot.

Runners with automatic qualifying times fill the top spots in each event, while those with provisional times fill in the remaining slots. The NCAA will take the top 24 athletes who have met qualifying standards in each event.

Galvan and the distance medley team will wait to see if they make it to the national meet when the NCAA makes the selections on Monday.

Next weekend’s championship in Fayetteville, Ark., marks the end of the indoor season for the track team. The Cyclones will move outdoors to start the second half of the season beginning with the Missouri Relays on March 29.
