New pizza place in Campustown
February 11, 2008
Campustown will be greeted with a new pizza place Monday.
Jeff’s Pizza Shop, 2402 Lincoln Way, will be opening its first shop in Iowa after establishing four spots in Wisconsin college towns, including Madison and Menomonie.
Jeff Uetz, owner of the chain, and his younger brother Chris, manager of Jeff’s, were attracted to Ames’ hometown feel and decided it was a good spot when they saw the opening on Lincoln Way.
Ron Eagan, realtor of the building, said the Uetzes completely remodeled the inside to make the place more their own and give it a more comfortable, homey feel.
“They put in new cupboards, built the booths themselves and they now have a walk-in freezer. They probably remodeled at least 90 percent of the space,” Eagan said.
The space Jeff’s Pizza Shop occupies had previously housed such businesses as a Mexican restaurant, a jewelry store and a drug store.
Jeff and Chris used the Cyclone colors of cardinal and gold as a base for the restaurant.
“Although we can’t use the exact colors, the walls and ceiling will be a lighter red and yellow, and we will hang some Cyclone decorations on the walls,” Jeff said.
Eagan said the Uetzes look forward to competing with the other pizza places in town.
“I think it’s a good product and they relish the competition from all the major pizza restaurants,” he said.
The brothers said they intend to compete by having their own style.
“We think every pizza place is going to be competition – we just have to stick to our menu and they’re going to stick to their own, and we’re going to offer people some variety,” Chris said. “Our pizza will be a little different, and we will have more variety such as toasted sub sandwiches and calzones,”
The sandwiches will be similar to what customers can purchase at Quizno’s Subs, with huge pieces of bread that can be festooned with a choice of 29 different toppings.
The restaurant offers free delivery all day and pizza by the slice from midnight to 3 a.m. each day.
“[The pizza by the slice] is done in order to try to catch the bar rush. We’ll see in this first week if it works or not,” Chris said.
The restaurant’s menu also features a five-meat pizza called the Farmers Frank, which is topped with bison, beef, ham, bacon and sausage. They will also offer other toppings not found at many other restaurants, including salami, shrimp, banana peppers and broccoli – all of which can be used on any food item.
The base price of a pizza ranges from $7.29 to $17.29, with pizza sizes of 10, 12, 14, 16 and 20 inches. On a pan pizza, toppings are $1.29 each.
