Mateo Tellez-Yanez, 21, of Ames, was arrested and charged with attempted murder early on June 11 after allegedly stabbing Darreyl Crausby, 21, near the 3800 block on West Lincoln Way.

Ames Police Commander Jim Robinson said Crausby was stabbed numerous times in the upper torso after a fight transpired.

He was transported to Mary Greeley Medical Center to be treated in the intensive care unit, where he stayed for more than five days.

Tellez-Yanez and his cousin, Miguel Campos-Tellez, 24, were taken into custody after the Huxley Police Department seized them heading south on Interstate 35 in an alleged attempt to flee the state early in the morning of June 11.

After a routine felony stop, the two men were transferred to the Story County Jail under a heavy bond.

Campos-Tellez was held as a material witness to the stabbing.

Tellez-Yanez was initially charged with attempted murder and going armed with intent, a Class B and Class C felony, respectively.

As the investigation continued, Campos-Tellez was charged with going armed with intent, a Class D felony.

In the hospital, Crausby spoke out, telling his version of the events.

Crausby said he was charged by both Tellez-Yanez and Campos-Tellez on the early morning of June 11 after a feud between Crausby’s friends and the attackers began.

Crausby, who claimed he did not want to initially be involved in the fight, said he stood between the two parties, hoping to stop the controversy.

After being stabbed 11 times, Crausby said he was left alone to survive after all involved fled the scene.

A call was made after the stabbing and Crausby was picked up and taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center.

At their arraignment July 2, Tellez-Yanez and Campos-Tellez pleaded not guilty.

The trial court date has been set for Aug. 21.
