Clinton to stop in Ames

Presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., will be making a stop in Ames this weekend on her campaign trail in pursuit of the presidency.

She will be speaking at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Prairie Moon Winery and Vineyards, 3801 W. 190th St.

Other speakers include Beau Biden, Delaware’s attorney general, speaking on behalf of his father Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del.; Rob Tully, chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party, speaking on behalf of John Edwards; and Congressman Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, speaking on behalf of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

Story County Democrats will be sponsoring the event, and other volunteers have been asked to help out in preparation for the evening.

Stephanie Bjornson, Clinton’s deputy director of communications for Iowa, said Clinton’s key points for her speech are getting troops out of Iraq, universal health care, universal pre-kindergarten for all 4-year-olds and boosting the middle class.

Clinton also plans to speak on a variety of economic issues dealing with energy and the environment. One of the important environmental issues that Clinton is planning to speak about on Saturday is “reducing dependency on foreign oil,” Bjornson said.

Clinton views Iowa as “among her top priorities,” Bjornson said about how Iowa fits within the larger scheme of things on the campaign trail.

Jan Bauer, chairwoman of the Story County Democrats, said they have been busy preparing for this event. The Story Country Democrats have also sponsored other events for presidential campaigners including Biden, Obama, and Gov. Bill Richardson this year.

Story County Democrats extended their welcome to the ISU Democrats and asked for some assistance in making the evening run smoothly.

James Hutter, ISU Democrats adviser and associate professor of political science, said he plans to attend the event along with 400 other members of the community who have gotten tickets. He is hopeful members of the ISU Democrats will join in as well.

Hutter said the group has been quite active this year in efforts to help campaigns that have come to Iowa. He said that over the years members of the ISU Democrats have proved to be quite successful in their political careers.

“It is phenomenal what ISU students can do here. This is one of the greatest places in the country to start a political career,” he said. “Opportunities are available right here on the ISU campus.”

Donald McDowell, chairman of ISU College Republicans and senior in political science, said he has attended Clinton campaigns in the past.

As a Republican, he said he thinks it is important to still attend Democratic campaigns and encourages other members of the ISU College Republicans to do the same. He also offered some praise to Hillary and commented on her ability to captivate an audience.

“Hillary Clinton is the best Democratic political campaigner,” he said. “No one else can command an audience quite like she can.”

Free tickets for the event can be picked up at 215 Stanton Ave.
