New budget model waits in wings

Although the proposed budget model has proceeded through various stages of its timeline relatively smoothly, the journey has not been without debate.

According to Daily staff reports, some members of the ISU faculty were worried about a concept they referred to as “gaming the system.”

One of the major tenets of the proposed model is the idea of tying tuition dollars more closely to the college or colleges a student takes classes from. Thus, colleges would receive more money if they attract more students.

In an article published Oct. 16, several professors hypothesized this might cause colleges to do things such as making classes easier or offering classes they would not normally teach, to get more of students’ tuition.

According to staff reports, members of the committee stated that they had confidence that the proposed budget model will not hurt the quality of an ISU education.

A final decision on the model won’t come until after the new year.
