After defeating the Cal Poly Mustangs 8-2 on Sunday, the Cyclones won the ShareSLO Classic in San Luis Obispo, California.

Iowa State now has a record 13-9 for the season with a little less than two weeks before conference play begins.

The Cyclones won four games total against the Utah State Aggies and Cal Poly at the ShareSLO Classic and lost one game to the Aggies.

Game one struggles

While the Cyclones did win the ShareSLO Classic, they did not get off to a hot start in their first game against Utah State on Friday. The Aggies routed Iowa State 10-1.

This is the second weekend that the Cyclones have struggled in the opening game. They lost to Northern Colorado 7-6 in game one of the Lopes Up Classic.

In both of those games combined, the Cyclones gave up a total of 11 runs in the first inning. In the other 57 innings that Cyclones played in the Lopes Up Classic and the ShareSLO Classic combined, Iowa State allowed 18 runs.

Big hits 

The Cyclones had 47 hits this weekend in the ShareSLO Classic, which averages out to more than eight hits per game.

Out of those 47 hits, 18 of them were extra-base hits (a double, triple or a home run).

Iowa State’s bats were particularly explosive on Saturday and Sunday, as the Cyclones had nearly 40 hits and 14 extra base hits.

Five of those extra-base hits were home runs, one from catchers senior Kaylee Bosworth and freshman Mikayla Ramos (who came in as a pinch hitter) and three from junior third basemen Logan Schaben.

The Cyclones are tied for fourth in home runs with 15 of them and tied for first in triples with eight of them among the seven teams in the Big 12.

Junior shortstop Sami Williams shines

In Iowa State’s 4-2 victory over Cal Poly on Friday afternoon, Williams, a Laguna Niguel, California native, added another accolade to her resume as she hit her 42nd double of her career which puts her in first place in program history.  

Williams now has hit eight doubles this season, which is tied for second among Big 12 players.

In her career, Williams has been a star for the Cyclones as she has earned All-Big 12 honors and All-Midwest honors in her first two years at Iowa State.

As a freshman and a sophomore, Williams led the Cyclones in batting average, hits, stolen bases, runs, home runs, RBI and slugging percentage.

Williams is well on her way to lead the Cyclones in all those statistics once again this season and could earn All-Big 12 honors once again as she is in the top 10 in the Big 12 in hits, doubles, batting average, triples, home runs and slugging percentage.
