Following their two victories over the Cyclones, the No. 10 Texas Longhorns earned their third victory on Sunday against the Cyclones by a score of 7-2 in Austin, Texas.

The Longhorns swept the Cyclones in large part because of their stifling defense that neutralized the Cyclones dynamic hitters. On Friday, the Longhorns had a perfect game fielding against the Cyclones.

Iowa State is 17-13 (0-3 Big 12) this season, meanwhile Texas improved to 29-6 (3-0 Big 12).

The Cyclones are tied with Texas Tech for sixth in the Big 12 out of seven.

Sami Williams’ hitting streak snapped

Coming into the three-game series against the Longhorns, junior shortstop Sami Williams had a 16-game hitting streak that started on Feb 24 against Dartmouth.

In their loss on Friday, one of the Cyclones’ best players was hitless, ending her hitting streak.

The Longhorns kept Williams in check the entire weekend as she was held to one hit in eight at-bats this weekend.

Despite struggling against Texas, Williams still has a batting average of .390 which is seventh among the Big 12 players.

Cyclones struggle in initial weekend game

This weekend marks the third weekend in the last month where the Cyclones have struggled in the opening game of the weekend.

In the first game of three against Texas, the Cyclones were throttled as the Longhorns won 11-0 and threw a perfect game.

In the last month, the Cyclones have been outscored 42-13 and have a record of 1-3 in those games, with their lone win coming against DePaul.

The Cyclones are 3-4 in weekend openers this season and have gone 1-3 in weekend openers since the beginning of March.

Hits but few runs

In the second and third games of the weekend combined, the Cyclones had 10 hits but produced three runs, two of which came from a home run hit by Sydney Stites on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Longhorns had only one more hit than the Cyclones. However, what made the difference is the fact that their hits led to runs scoring, as the Longhorns had six RBI’s (runs batted in), while the Cyclones had one.

All in all, the Cyclones only scored three runs off 10 hits this weekend and have had 194 hits and have scored 108 runs this season which both rank sixth out of the seven teams in the Big 12.

On average this season, the Cyclones score 3.27 runs per game.

What’s next?

The Cyclones will begin their first home series of the season, starting Friday against No. 14 Texas Tech.

First pitch will be thrown at 4 p.m. at Cyclones Sports Complex.
