Soccer splits weekend matches
October 9, 2005
Stephanie Kaphingst and the ISU women’s soccer team pulled off a small miracle Friday night, but didn’t have enough magic left to last the weekend.
With 12 seconds left in regulation against Texas A&M, the sophomore forward headed in a pass from seldom-used reserve Elisa Berzins, breaking a tie and giving the Cyclones their first ever win against the Aggies, 1-0.
Amy Flores scored her team-leading seventh goal to give Iowa State (8-4-3, 3-2-1 Big 12) an early lead against Baylor on Sunday, but a goal with more than 15 minutes left in the game put the Bears ahead for good, 2-1.
The loss partially soured what was an amazing start to the weekend for the Cyclones.
Kaphingst’s goal was the first shot by Iowa State in the entire second half against Texas A&M – only the third ISU shot of the entire game, but it was enough. The 18th-ranked Aggies outshot the Cyclones, 25-3, but couldn’t get past goalkeeper Joanna Haig.
“This is the biggest win in the history of our program, without a doubt,” said coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “Our team never gave up, put forth an outstanding effort, and we knew it would only take one goal to win the game.
“This is huge for our program, and we believed from the moment the match started that we would win the game.”
Berzins drove the ball into the box after the Aggie defense tried to clear the ball, and Kaphingst redirected the pass into the upper-right corner of the net, past preseason all-conference goalkeeper Kati Jo Spisak.
Haig joined Spisak on that preseason team, but out-worked her counterpart, stopping 12 shots on goal in the game. The 12 saves were the most for Haig since she tallied 14 in a 1-0 loss to Texas in 2004.
Friday’s win was also the fifth shutout of the season for the Cyclone goalkeeper.
“Joanna played like an All-American tonight,” Hornbacher said. “She showed tonight why she is one of the top goalkeepers in the nation.”
Iowa State’s all-time record was 0-10-1 against Texas A&M coming into the game.
It was only the third win over a ranked team in 29 previous attempts, and gave the Cyclones their best start in the program’s history.
But Sunday’s setback wasn’t the follow-up Hornbacher was looking for.
“This was a disappointing loss for us, as we didn’t come out and execute our gameplan,” Hornbacher said.
“We didn’t create opportunities and weren’t as organized as we were on Friday against A&M.
“We have some very important games ahead of us and we need to refocus and correct our mistakes.”
Flores scored 23 minutes into the game against the Bears off a double-assist from fellow senior Kristina Baumann and freshman Amanda Purple.
Baylor was able to tie the game right before half and went on to collect their first conference victory of the year.
Iowa State outshot the Bears, 10-9, in the game and Haig had three saves.
The Cyclones return home Friday against Texas.
