A high-end business apparel store on Main Street is shutting its doors after 40 years of business.

John Huber Clothiers, 404 Main St., is closing Saturday after many years of selling quality men’s and women’s clothing in Ames.

John Huber, owner of the store for 35 years, and manager for the last five, opened the store on Welch Avenue in 1970.

“We sold everything from blue jeans to interview suits,” Huber said.

The store moved to the Main Street location in 1985 and was bought out by Midwest Clothiers in 1990.

Midwest Clothiers closed Bremer’s in Iowa City recently after 90 years of business but also owns many similar stores in Iowa.

Midwest Clothiers plans to open a new store in the Des Moines area called Sarto, Huber said.

“Midwest Clothiers is refocusing its assets to the Des Moines metro market,” he said.

So far, the building where John Huber Clothiers is has not been purchased by anyone.

“We are very optimistic about renting the space,” Huber said. “There are only two empty spots on Main Street, and it is a very healthy downtown area.”

Huber is not planning to open a new store.

“I am excited about moving on to something else,” he said.
