An ISU student is facing felony charges in connection with a theft of more than $5,000 from customers of his former employer.

Mazen Abdelbasir, freshman in pre-architecture, was arrested Friday night after Younkers loss-prevention officers discovered the theft at the department store’s North Grand Mall location.

Ames Police Detective Jerry Spencer said four customer credit card numbers had been taken over a two-week period, with a total amount in excess of $5,000 missing. He said Abdelbasir was charged with forgery involving credit cards, a Class D felony carrying penalties of up to $7,500 in fines and five years in prison.

According to police logs, Abdelbasir was transported to the Story County Sheriff’s Office.

Janet Baldus, trial court supervisor for Story County Courts, said Abdelbasir was released on zero percent of a $10,000 bond.

Pete Hunter, store manager at the Ames Younkers location, declined to comment.

Abdelbasir could not be reached for comment.

Spencer said forgery cases usually leave a paper trail.

“Everybody’s entitled to their day in court, but there’s pretty good documentation in a case like this,” he said.

Story County Attorney Steve Holmes could not be reached.

Baldus said Abdelbasir has a preliminary hearing at 1 p.m. on June 20 at the Story County Courthouse.
