A sport utility vehicle crashed through the entryway of an apartment building and down a flight of stairs on Friday afternoon. The accident occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. at the Eastwood Apartments building 18 at 420 east 7th Street. Police say both occupants of the red 1991 Chevy Blazer were transported to Mary Greeley Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
“This thing went straight through, all the way in to the basement,” said Ames police patrol officer Allen Lavender.
Sgt. Brian Braymen said police received the call at 1:30 p.m.
He said he did not know the names or conditions of the vehicle’s occupants as of Friday afternoon.
Braymen said factors causing or contributing to the crash have not yet been determined.
“They just obviously lost control approaching the building somehow,” he said.
The amount of damage was also unknown.
“I imagine there was extensive damage to the vehicle and an unknown amount of damage to the building,” Braymen said.
He said he is unaware of potential criminal charges against the driver.
“I haven’t been informed of any yet, the whole incident is under investigation still at this time,” Braymen said. “It all depends on the situation.”
A representative of the Eastwood Apartments could not be reached for comment.
The Chevy Blazer was taken to Dave’s Auto and Truck Service, Inc, 205 E. 2nd Street in Ames.
