Power Farming Show previews latest technologies

DES MOINES — New technologies were everywhere at Iowa’s largest indoor farming show last week, as companies came out in huge numbers to demonstrate and advertise their products.

The Power Farming Show attracts farmers from across the Midwest who are interested in the latest technology available in agriculture. This year, more than 600 exhibitors had displays at the show held at the Iowa Events Center.

“This is Iowa’s largest indoor show,” said Andrew Goodman, executive vice president of the Iowa-Nebraska Equipment Dealers Association Inc. “Iowa is where the action is.”

New Holland, an agricultural dealer, showcased equipment from its lawn- and garden-tractor line and high horsepower tractors and combines. An auto-guided tractor and a combine were two of the latest technologies featured.

“We’ve had this tractor in our lineup for three years now,” said Doug Dehrkoop, New Holland representative. “In the last year, we’ve come out with the auto-guide system.”

He said the auto-guide in the tractor gives farmers the ability to push a button and drive the tractor in the field. It reduces driver fatigue and increases accuracy, since the tractor is more precise in avoiding overlap in the field.

White Planters, a division of the AGCO Corporation, was another exhibitor.

The White Central Fill System was one of its products on display.

Unlike some other planters on the market, the White Central Fill System uses only two seed hoppers instead of individual row hoppers. The two large hoppers reduce seed filling time.

Also, the planter system releases positive air instead of using a vacuum. Larry Kuster, territory manager for Sunflower Manufacturing, a division of AGCO, said the positive air system uses fewer moving parts than the vacuum, which reduces wear on the equipment.

“It saves the user a lot of expense,” Kuster said.

Ed Mulligan of Olin said he enjoys seeing the new technology at the Power Farming Show.

“We came to see the newest, latest toys,” he said. “We want to know what else is on the market.”
