LETTER: Iowa needs stricter helmet laws

Iowa is one of three states in the United States that has no helmet laws at all. I believe that Iowa could at least do as 19 other states have done and require kids under the age of 18 to wear bicycle helmets.

A good reason for this is most kids under 18 are not very experienced riders, coupled with the obvious fact that most kids are reckless riders/drivers.

Since 1967, when the government first started requiring helmet laws, it has gone back and forth on the requirement of helmet laws.

Since Congress can’t make up its mind about helmet laws, I believe states should step up and require their riders to protect themselves. Between being bothered a little by wearing a helmet or toting it around and losing a life, I believe that the greater worth is in saving lives.
