Cyclones go 1-1 on opening day of Lopes Up Classic

Iowa State played two back-to-back games on Friday in the Lopes Up Classic tournament. The Cyclones lost to Northern Colorado, 7-6, but defeated Utah, 7-4.

The Cyclones played the Northern Colorado Bears at 10 a.m. The Bears came out fighting with a strong first inning. After the top of the first, the Cyclones were left to fight for every run, as the Bears lead 7-0.

In the bottom of the third, two doubles by junior Sami Williams and senior Taylor Nearad made the score 7-2. This was followed by senior Kirsten Caudle’s home run to center field in the fourth inning to make the score 7-3.

At the bottom of the seventh inning, Sami Williams delivered a three-run homer to right center to cut the lead to one. The Bears managed to come out on top with a final score of 7-6.

The Cyclones bounced back against Utah. A strong Cyclone offense lead the way in the 7-4 win. Utah started the game with a lead of 2-1, but senior Kaylee Bosworth singled to left field to allow Sydney Stites to score.

Utah followed with two RBI singles in the fourth inning to make the score 4-1. The Cyclones responded with an explosive fifth inning. With two singles and one triple, the Cyclones took a 7-4 lead. Iowa State closed the game, pushing its overall record to 7-7.

The Cyclones will be back in action on Saturday against Northern Colorado at 3 p.m. and Grand Canyon University at 7:30 p.m.
