Student reports being struck by athlete
October 28, 2004
An ISU student reported an altercation with an ISU football player Wednesday, according to ISU Police records.
According to an entry in the ISU Police log, Nathan Weiss, freshman in industrial technology, reported at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday that he had been struck by Cyclone defensive back Joshua Hargis, junior in sociology, at or near the Union Drive Community Center.
Weiss declined to comment. Hargis could not be reached for comment.
No charges have been filed, and ISU Police officials did not release any information about the incident Thursday. ISU Police Capt. Gene Deisinger said early Thursday afternoon that he was still receiving reports from the officers who responded to the call. Deisinger did not return repeated phone calls later in the day.
Tom Kroeschell, associate athletic director for media relations, said athletic department policy prohibits officials from discussing possible criminal incidents before the department receives an incident report.
Corey Ylinen, senior in mechanical engineering, said he didn’t know who was involved in the incident, but said he thought he might have seen its aftermath. Ylinen said that, when he came out of the community center around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, he saw a blond man sitting on the steps outside of the building speaking with two police officers.
“He just looked shaken up,” he said.
A little farther down the sidewalk toward Helser Hall, there was a group of “big guys” talking, Ylinen said.
“They were probably talking about what happened, but I don’t know,” he said.
Hargis came to Iowa State from Palomar College in San Diego, transferring to Iowa State before the season.
While at Palomar, Hargis was an all-USA Iron Man first-team defensive selection. Hargis led all community college players in interceptions with 11.
Hargis has appeared in several games for the Cyclones this year.
