Woman allegedly tried to steal money from dead person
September 16, 2004
Ames police recently apprehended an individual accused of attempting to steal more than $80,000 from a dead woman.
According to a release issued by the department, Angela R. Reis, Story City, was taken into custody Wednesday after turning herself in for outstanding arrest warrants.
Police said that in July, Reis, 28, used her home computer to access the bank account of Inez Warren, an Ames resident who died in April 2004. Police said Reis used the US Bank Web site to arrange for a check amounting to $30,000 to be mailed to her home address.
Reis is accused of entering the US Bank office at 405 Main St., and using a falsified last will and testament and other fake documents, attempting to withdraw $51,860 from the deceased woman’s account.
The bank reportedly refused Reis the funds and said it would hold the funds until the will was verified. Warren’s actual will and testament had not yet been executed.
Ames Police Cmdr. Jim Robinson said that Reis didn’t personally know Warren, but had connections to her through Warren’s grandson. The grandson, he said, appeared to have no knowledge of Reis’ accused offenses.
Reis was charged with first degree theft and fraudulent practice, both class C felonies; two counts of identity theft, a class D felony; and two counts of tampering with records, both aggravated misdemeanors.
If convicted on all counts, Reis could be sentenced to 32 years in prison and fined up to $42,500.
Reis could not be contacted for this article.
