Farm House welcomes citizens to celebrate Independence Day

The newly restored Fourth of July parade isn’t the only point of pride this Fourth of July in Ames.

Beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, the Farm House Museum on campus will be hosting a birthday party for the opening of the museum, 28 years ago on July 4, 1976.

“That was the first time it opened as a museum,” said Eleanor Ostendorf, caretaker of Farm House Museum. “So we like to celebrate that date.”

From 1 to 4 p.m. there will be old-fashioned Victorian lawn games for children to play. 1860 to 1910 are the years represented at the museum, so children will have such games as sack races and Hoops and Graces, Ostendorf said.

There will be crafts and bubbles for children as well, and parents and adults are encouraged to go inside the museum where knowledgeable volunteers can tell them about the history, Ostendorf said.

There will also be a performance by a local group, the Onion Creek Cloggers. It has Victorian music and instruments and has included the children to join them in past performances.

“They have been coming for years,” Ostendorf said. “Onion Creek Cloggers are a tradition.”

The birthday celebration will have refreshments, such as popcorn and hot dogs, that can be purchased for a small charge.

“It is a very nice time for families to be together in the afternoon,” Ostendorf said, “and then relax and prepare for the fireworks performance at night.”

The Ames Municipal Band will also be playing at Moore Memorial Park, which is on the northwest side of Ames. Its Fourth of July performance will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Fireworks will start at dusk and will be shot out of Stuart Smith Park. The park is located near Jack Trice Stadium.

The bicentennial year of 1976 was the last year for a parade, and Ames is long overdue for one, parade organizer Darryl Bennett said.

With more than 500 American flags to hand out and what is said to be the largest candy give-away in Ames history, Bennett hopes those appreciating an old-fashioned, flag-waving parade will make their way to Main Street on Sunday at 1 p.m.
