Women golfers to battle in Tulsa

After gaining momentum in a season-best showing at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in Denver, Colo., the ISU women’s golf team heads to Tulsa, Okla., this week to compete at the Battle of the Lakes Invitational, their largest tournament yet this fall.

A second-place finish at the Denver tournament last week has the Cyclones rolling, head coach Julie Manning said.

The Cyclones hope to place in the top three out of 15 competitors, Manning said. Iowa State’s toughest competition will likely come from host Oral Roberts and Southern Methodist University, she said. Intrastate rival Northern Iowa will also be competing at the invitational.

Though the Cyclones finished behind Oral Roberts early in the season, they finished nine strokes ahead of the Golden Eagles in the most recent meeting between the schools with 54-hole scores of 971 and 962, respectively. The Cyclones also started off their season with a 36-hole victory (610-626) over Northern Iowa.

The team will again travel without junior standout Lisa Meshke, after it was officially determined last week that a fractured bone in her elbow will keep her from competing in the rest of the Cyclones’ fall season.

Claire Stephanson, who has filled in Meshke’s spot for the past two tournaments, carded her highest individual placing as a Cyclone last week in Denver, tying for 20th place.

The Cyclones will play 36 holes Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday at the Shangri La Resort and Golf Course outside Tulsa, Okla.
