Women’s tennis team faces Kansas

It doesn’t get any easier for the ISU women’s tennis team this weekend.

The Cyclones, who dropped all six singles matches in a 6-1 loss to No. 45 Baylor last weekend, face No. 46 Kansas at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center on Saturday.

“We know that they’re strong,” head coach Michele Conlon said of the Jayhawks. “They’ve always been really tough and have a great history, but I think my team is pretty spirited at this point.”

The final score overshadowed some great doubles play by Iowa State, Conlon said. Freshman Suzanne Rutten teamed up with junior Sabrina Evers to knock off Baylor’s Barbora Blahutiakova and Alison Bradley 8-6. ISU seniors Tara Goedjen and Kristin Gyaki also handed an 8-5 loss to a Baylor tandem — helping the Cyclones earn their lone point.

Conlon said the doubles teams carried her team. “Our doubles have been outstanding,” Conlon said. “Against Baylor, Suzanne and Sabrina were terrific. Kristin and Tara played great as well.”

Gyaki said the team often gains momentum after doubles performances that go well. “We’ve always relied on our doubles,” Gyaki said. “I think we get confidence from our doubles and it carries over to our singles matches.”

Gyaki said scores have been lopsided, but it doesn’t mean the team isn’t fighting for every point.

The Cyclones are 1-4 and 0-3 in the Big 12, but Conlon said this weekend could be the breakthrough her team’s looking for.

“Despite our losses last weekend, I thought there were some great moments,” Conlon said. “We’re playing really well in a lot of areas, so there’s no cause for concern on my end.”

Conlon said one reason she is optimistic about her team is the way it handled a vocal Baylor crowd last weekend. “We responded well to that type of environment,” Conlon said.

Conlon said the environment will favor her team this weekend.

“We’ll be in different circumstances. Last week we were playing outdoors for the very first time,” Conlon said. “This week we’re back at home and inside. I think that will make a difference as far as play goes.”
