COLUMN: Bubba soils Athens’ tasteful culture

I don’t know about you, but if you’ve been watching “Total Request Live” lately, you probably have heard about a big, fat, white rapper named Bubba Sparxxx.

The Georgia native just released his new album “Bright Nights, Dark Days” last week and it has been burning up the charts for some reason I am unaware of. And to top things off, Bubba decided to make Athens the site of his CD release party, at a local bar called “Gator Haters.”

Approximately 1,000 people took to the streets Wednesday for the 8 p.m. party, with some starting to form a line at 5 p.m. That day, an arts and entertainment reporter for The Red & Black had written in her article that Bubba’s management was going to let in locals because “it’s a party for our people.”

The rather large 23-year-old southern rapper had chosen Athens as the site of his new video “Ugly.” Lovely shots of the Wal-Mart parking lot and a nearby field were the back drops to the “the most authentic video on TV right now,” said Bubba in an interview with MTV.

That video is just like any other rap video on TV right now, with the exception of Missy Elliot riding on a damn tractor. With that factor alone, it’s just plain dumb.

Anyway, back to last Wednesday night.

OutKast, the Atlanta dynamic duo that is beloved by all Georgians, and me for that matter, were supposed to show, along with the likes of Timbaland and (gasp!) Carson Daly.

Everyone was up in arms about it; it was amazing what a fat white rapper can do to a town that has so much more (tasteful) culture.

Much to the crowd’s dismay, the owners of the bar would not let any private citizens into the club invitation only, with the exception of the DJ coming outside every once in a while to snatch a few girls.

I know one girl who was invited in and when she came out, she was practically beaten up by some other girls who were green with jealousy.

As the night went on, the crowd grew and Athens-Clarke County police had to close off the street.

The fat man himself didn’t show up to the party until midnight, in a steely-looking black limo.

OutKast didn’t show up until 12:30 a.m., and they rolled up to “Gator Haters” in a van with “OutKast” painted on it. Also in attendance at the party was Evander Holyfield.

It’s a shame that a town so cool has to waste its time on a wannabe such as Bubba Sparxxx.

I fully believe the people of Athens could find better things to do than dress up skanky or thuggish, and pray to God that you could be in another drawn-out, ridiculous rap video, with farm machinery no less.
