Letter to the editor: Is Jerrett acquainted with Bush?
December 3, 2000
So I wrote a letter a couple days ago complaining about the Democratic version of a fair count and how it is anything but fair. Today I open the paper and see Greg Jerrett whining some more about the count.
He says that, “anybody who tells you this election has already been won is obviously not familiar with the standard of counting votes.” I don’t think vote counters in Florida are familiar with the standards of counting votes. Isn’t the whole problem in Florida the lack of counting standards? I guess some people choose to ignore the truth.
Mr. Jerrett also claims that Bush would have reacted the same way Gore has if the election had gone the other way. I would like to know why Mr. Jerrett would assume such a thing.
Does he know George W. Bush? Has Bush admitted to him that he would do the same things Gore is trying to do? If so, it’s the first I’ve heard of it.
If people remember, there was an election this close in history. And as I read in the history books, the Democrats won that one. In fact, the Republican candidate, Richard Nixon, quietly conceded the election to prevent harming the public good. So why would Mr. Jerrett think Bush would act any differently?
Mr. Jerrett goes on to trash talk Bush with jokes and puns calling him “homespun” and “folksy.” This is nothing short of excellent journalism.
Who needs facts and expert analysis when we have good old-fashion name calling. Didn’t the Daily run a number of columns and letters earlier this semester condemning name calling? That’s about as fair as the Florida recount.
