Iowa State knocked off Oklahoma on Monday by a final score of 75-74. The Cyclones’ win was their fourth in a row and sixth in their last seven games.

Balanced attack leads Cyclones

Iowa State has had three different leading scorers in its last five games. That balanced scoring attack was out in full force against the Sooners.

Iowa State had five players in double figures — Lindell Wigginton, Marial Shayok, Tyrese Haliburton, Michael Jacobson and Talen Horton-Tucker.

Even with a rough night for redshirt senior guard Nick Weiler-Babb (three points on 1-for-6 shooting), the Cyclones kept Oklahoma on its heels thanks to the balance.

Similar to recent games, Iowa State kept its rotation to seven, with the eighth man, Zoran Talley Jr., playing four minutes. The seven-man rotation has helped get the Cyclones’ best scorers more looks at the basket, since six players took at least seven shots against Oklahoma.

Iowa State keeps pace in Big 12 race

Coach Steve Prohm has talked about the importance of protecting home court and stealing wins on the road.

For the No. 17 Cyclones (17-5, 6-3 Big 12), last week’s two-game home slate kept them in the race for the Big 12. But in order to make up ground for previous losses, Monday’s game in Norman, Oklahoma, was critical.

By beating the Sooners, Iowa State picked up its third road win in Big 12 play. Iowa State is now 3-2 on the road in conference games, which puts the Cyclones in strong position with the rest of the Big 12’s elites.

Baylor and Kansas State, the last two teams in Big 12 play with only two losses, each have just one road loss so far.

Iowa State has a home game next (1 p.m. Saturday against TCU) giving the Cyclones a break before a big matchup at Kansas State.
