MP3.com launches first technology tour

The Web site that features hundreds of thousands of MP3s from bands of all genres is getting ready to kick off its first annual tour.

MP3.com will bring the first concert of its MP3.com Music and Technology Tour to the University of Iowa. The nationwide festival is hitting over 50 different college campuses.

The tour is a showcase of both mainstream acts and local bands promoting the latest in music technology. The Technology and Music Village, which will be held in Hubbard Park in Iowa City, will combine live music and several extreme sports with booths featuring new computer technology and Internet programs related to music.

Headlining this year’s tour is pop rock giants the Goo Goo Dolls. The band’s sixth album, “Dizzy Up the Girl,” is currently experiencing success in all musical arenas.

This week “Dizzy Up the Girl” has climbed from No. 37 to No. 24 on the Billboard charts and has been on the Top 200 chart for 51 weeks. Lending to the album’s growing success are the downloads of songs off of “Dizzy Up the Girl,” available for free from MP3.com.

When the tour hits Iowa City, it will be divided into two separate events. In the evening, the Goo Goo Dolls will be joined by the hard-rocking Tonic in Carver Hawkeye Arena.

Headlining the Village is Jude, a rising musician whose music is featured on the “City of Angels” soundtrack, and who had a minor hit with the funky “Rick James.”

Throughout the day, the Village will also feature local acts who have their music available for download on MP3.com’s Web site.

Included in the lineup is Korn-with-a-chick rockers Smakdab, Vida Blue, Greta Gaines, Lyricist Lounge, Still Gravy and Squid Boy, among others.

Kicking off the Village show will be Ames’ own seven-piece ska outfit, the Mediocre Superheroes.

The Superheroes are currently experiencing their share of success on MP3.com. Their debut single titled “42” has been camping at the No. 1 slot on the Iowa MP3 Ska chart for the past two weeks and is holding the No. 4 slot on the national ska chart.

“I guess being on the charts is sort of a big deal to us,” Mediocre guitarist and vocalist Brandon “Dunar” Boelman said. “Especially since the site is worldwide. It’s cool having been No. 1 for the past two weeks.”

The tour, which was initially scheduled to visit the Iowa State campus along with the U of I, had scheduling conflicts and will only be hitting Iowa City.

Normally, the event only features bands from the city hosting the concert; however, because the Mediocre Superheros have a song on the Web site, organizers decided to stretch the rules.

The Mediocre Superheroes’ MP3.com Web site has currently been experiencing over 100 hits per day and 40 to 50 downloads of “42.” With heavy Web traffic on their site, the Superheroes are confident that their music is punching through the local circuit and into the national market.

“By putting yourself on the Web, you get much larger distribution,” Boelman says. “Anyone in the world can go online and go to MP3.com, go to the Mediocre Superheroes and see that we’ve got a song for downloading and a CD for sale.

“We’re getting way more hits on our MP3.com Web site than we’re getting on our own Web page. It makes you wonder who’s downloading all of these songs.”
