Track led by Beyer, Woods

The Iowa State track teams pulled double duty this weekend, making split-team appearances in two meets.

Jamie Beyer led the way for the Cyclones in the Texas Relays, while Jason Woods played the role of leader at the Bearcat Invitational in Maryville, Mo.

Beyer had a discus toss of 191-9, which places him second on the Cyclones’ all-time list behind 1981 NCAA champion Scott Crowell.

The toss was enough to give Beyer the bronze, but the big man wasn’t done there.

Beyer also placed seventh in the shot put with a put of 57-3.

Other Cyclones who contributed in the Texas Relays were Quiande Moore, Justin Hyde, Philemon Too and Lisa Griebel.

Moore, the freshman sensation from Zion, Ill., placed fifth in the high jump (7-0) and sixth in the triple jump (51-3).

Hyde had a seventh place finish in the 110 meter-high hurdles with a time of 14.03.

Too placed fifth in the 3000-meter steeplechase, clocking in at 9:14.37.

Griebel lead the women’s team with a third-place effort in the shot put (51-3).

The Bearcat Invitational had many highlights, including Kevin Wilson shedding the shoulder pads for the track uniform and a 1-2-3 finish in the men’s 110-meter hurdles.

Wilson began the day with a sixth place finish in the javelin (159-5), then decided to enter the long jump, which he won with a leap of 23.5.

Woods, an All-American senior from Treynor, led the charge in the men’s 110-meter hurdles with gold honors and a time of 13.95.

Sarah DeRonde also pulled a deuce, winning the javelin (134-8) and placing second in the discus (141-8).

Marci Krumm placed fourth in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:22.24.

The Cyclones will compete in the prestigious Drake Relays in Des Moines next weekend.

ISU has traditionally performed well at the Relays, as 30 Cyclones have been winners since 1987 — the most from any school.
