The Lied Recreation Center was home this weekend to some of the biggest names in collegiate track and field.

The Iowa State Classic was in full effect early Friday evening, and the action did not end until late Saturday afternoon.

Among the big names participating in the meet were Florida State, Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Illinois, Michigan State and the Nike Central team.

The women’s team had another standout performance in which five Cyclones received medalist honors.

Quite possibly the brightest point of the meet was provided when Marcy Krumm and teammate Janelle Edmundson placed first and second in the 600-yard dash.

Krumm’s time was 1:25.92, while Edmundson’s was 1:28.39.

More fireworks were added to the mix by Alienor Gilchrist.

Gilchrist placed third in the mile with a time of 4:47.43.

The other two Cyclones to place were Barbara Szlendakova and Lisa Griebel.

Szlendakova found gold in the long jump as a leap of 6.17 meters continued her hot streak.

Griebel won bronze in the shot with a distance of 15.37 meters.

The men’s team was not quite as successful in total placing, but the effort was still successful, especially considering the quality of the competition.

Some of the highlights of the weekend for the Cyclones were a fourth-place finish in the shot by Jamie Beyer, with a throw of 18.28 meters.

Another gleaming moment came when Justin Hyde finished second in his heat of the 60-meter high hurdles with a time of 8.17 seconds.

Both teams will be in action again next weekend at the UNI Dome Open in Cedar Falls.

For those not wanting to make the drive, the Cyclones return for their final home meet of the year.

The NCAA qualifying rounds will be held the weekend of February 26.
