Track teams impress at Big 12 meet

The Iowa State indoor track team was in action last weekend, taking it’s act to Jayhawk country. This year, Ahearn Fieldhouse was the home of the Big 12 conference meet, a meet that Jamie Beyer wanted to make an impact at.

The team was impressive in the Big 12 meet with both teams having standout personal performances.

The Cyclone women’s team placed eighth overall with a total of 47.5 points while the men totaled 53 points to put them in the ninth position.

The meet was dominated by the Texas Longhorns, whose women and men each won team titles with scores of 115 and 113, respectively.

The tempo of the men’s team was set by Jamie Beyer, who once again took home the gold. Beyer had a winning throw in the men’s shot put of 61 feet 11 3/4 inches, which was a personal best. The toss also ousted his meet record of 61 feet 2 inches, which he set on the road to a first-place finish in the ’97 meet.

Beyer also qualified for the NCAA meet in Indianapolis with a third place finish in the weight throw.

Beyer was redshirted last year, but track fans will have one more year to watch the homegrown junior from Monroe, Iowa. After the standout performance that saw him qualify for the NCAA meet, he reflected the confidence that led to his victory.

“I knew what I was capable of doing,” he said. “People asked me what they thought I could do, and my answer before the meet was ‘enough to win.’ I am going to concentrate on the weight throw to get ready for the NCAA Championship.”

Super-freshman Quiande Moore placed in three events.

Moore had a second-place finish in the triple jump and set a career best in the event with a leap of 51 feet 9 inches.

He also placed fourth in the high jump by clearing 7 feet 1 1/2 inches.

Teammate Joey Brunkhorst placed eighth with a top height of 6 feet 7 1/2 inches.

Moore, who won all three events at the 1998 Illinois high school track meet, had this to say about the day: “I am used to competing in all three events. I enjoy the triple jump more because you can be more explosive in that event.”

ISU men’s track coach Steve Lynn felt his team’s effort was predictable.

“We actually scored about what I thought we would,” he said. “Jamie’s effort was outstanding. He really responded to any challenges and threw over 61 feet three straight times. Quiande showed what a competitor he is today, and Quinn just missed.”

Other outstanding performers for the men were Quinn Harris, who placed third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.7 seconds (.2 off of the leader).

Nic Weers finished sixth in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:12.86. Jake Overman placed seventh in the 800 meters, while Adrian Dunbar also had a seventh place finishing in the 60-meter hurdles.

The women’s team got a boost from Alienor Gilchrist who placed sixth in the mile with a time of 4:56.96.

Sophomore Leah Elbert tied for fifth in the high jump clearing the bar at 5 feet 7 3/4 inches.

Katarina Svensson rounded out the top solo performers on the day with a time of 1:24.54 in the 600-yard run which placed her at seventh. She also placed eighth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.84.

Svensson also returned to help out the 4×400 meter relay team which, along with Victoria Gunnarson, Christina Peterson and Barbara Szlendakova, captured fifth place with a time of 3:47.21.

Women’s head coach Dick Lee had mixed feelings on his team’s performance.

“We had a great day yesterday,” he said, “but we missed out on some points.

“Leah cleared the same height that the runner-up did in the high-jump. Katarinna’s specialty is the 400 hurdles, but she still placed in two events today.

“Alienor gave us a great effort last night and today,” he said. “I think if she had gone out just a second faster early on, she would have been in the top four.”

This meet was nowhere to be found on the Cyclones’ schedule for any of the faithful fans, but the big one is.

The NCAA qualifying meet will be held at the Leid Recreation Center tonight and Saturday with the action starting in the afternoon.

Then the qualifiers will have one last chance to shine at the indoor championships in Indianapolis the weekend of March 5 and 6.
