The Iowa State Gymnastics team looked impressive Saturday night at Hilton, hosting what may have been its biggest meet of the year.

The team finished second in the meet behind Big 12 powerhouse Nebraska.

ISU hosted Winona, Nebraska and a surprising Michigan State team for its first meet of the year. Nearly 2,000 turned out to see the much-heralded Cyclone freshman class.

Iowa State was helped out with many key performances on the night. Sophomore Jessica Smith had a career night on the balance beam, with a score of 9.875. She was matched by two other teammates, Shelly Kringen and “Sissy” Huey, all of whom finished in a three-way tie for third in the event.

Huey had another standout performance, placing first overall on the uneven bars with a score of 9.85.

Kringen also found herself in the top three of another event, placing third in floor competition with a 9.825.

The team had a vault score of 47.525, a bar score of 48.2, a beam score of 49.25 and a floor score of 47.6.

The team finished with a running score of 192.575, barely behind the 193.725 of Nebraska.

Michigan State finished with a running score of 190.225, followed by 182.525 from Winona State.

Heather Brink of Nebraska was the all-around point leader of the night with an impressive 39.050.

The team will be at home in February when they host the Missouri Tigers. Fans dedicated to the tumblers, however, can head south to Columbia and watch the team as they try to tame the Tigers Jan. 22.
