Dance Marathon a success for Greek Week

Emily Metz

On Sunday, March 29, in State Gym, 200-plus Iowa State students gathered to dance for 10 straight hours to raise money for children who have cancer. Close to $18,000 was raised in ISU’s first-ever Dance Marathon, which is done at other universities across the United States. That’s a very awesome accomplishment, and one might think that it would be a front- page story in the Daily on Monday. That was not the case, though. In fact, there wasn’t a story printed until Thursday, and it looked like it was just thrown together at the last minute and stuck on any page that had a little bit of open space.

I realize that newspapers sometimes make mistakes and don’t always hear right away about activities that are going on throughout campus, but there should be no excuses about Dance Marathon. A Greek Week advertisement ran in the Daily for the past two weeks that had the itinerary of the events for the week, and the Dance Marathon was included in that. Did anyone even think to ask what the event was all about?

Yes, I am greek, and I am upset that something really great that was done by the greek system was unrecognized by their own student newspaper, but I’m more upset for the children that the Dance Marathon sponsored. They were the stars, and to see something that they were a huge part of in the paper the following day would have been so special for them.

I hope that in the future, the Daily will try harder to keep on top of things, because excluding a wonderful activity like Dance Marathon is something that should have never happened.
