Fraternity honored with Harvard Award
October 14, 1997
The Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Iowa State was honored with the Harvard Award for excellence in their chapter for the second year in a row.
This is the second time in two years ISU’s chapter has won the Harvard Award.
Chris Baughman, president of Phi Delta Theta, and Andrew Peterson, treasurer of Phi Delta Theta, were present for the award ceremony this summer while attending the Leadership College in Oxford, Ohio.
Baughman said the Harvard Award meant a lot for the fraternity. “It lets our alumni and the public see that the Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Iowa State is doing well,” he said.
ISU’s Phi Delta Theta chapter competed with 176 other chapters nationwide.
The chapters are divided into small, medium and large divisions. ISU falls into the large division, because of the size of the chapter, the number of male undergraduates and the number of fraternities in the greek system at ISU, Baughman said.
To win the Harvard Award, the fraternity compiled reports of activities during Greek Week and throughout the year. The more points a chapter receives, the better, Baughman said.
“Placing first at Veishea last year really helped us out,” he said.
Phi Delta Theta at ISU has done well in the competition in recent years, Baughman said.
Besides winning the Harvard Award the past two years, the fraternity was also a runner-up for three years.
Phi Delta Theta has also been honored with the Biggers Ritual Award; the Bininger Religious Life Award for high morals, character and service; the Community Service Award; the General Headquarters Award; the Gold Star Award; the Sound Learning Award and honorable mention from the Dallas Alumni, Baughman said.
“With this being my senior year, I was very happy to know that all of the effort and hard work paid off,” Peterson said.
