Larch deejays jingle down
December 6, 1996
As the snow came down, three Larch Hall residents made a spontaneous decision to share their holiday spirit with the rest of the Richardson Court Association Thursday.
Shortly after 10 a.m., Scott Sorheim, Justin Wilson and Patrick Jones set up one speaker and one amplifier against Wilson’s and Jones’ north room window, turned up the volume and played a few hours of Christmas carols for the rest of RCA to hear.
“We were in the Christmas spirit and the snow was falling,” Sorheim said.
“We were just in a holiday mood.”
“I thought it was great,” said Adam Warren, a junior in computer engineering and a Larch Hall resident.
“I think it’s cool. It was all Christmasy outside and it was snowing. Everyone who was coming in (the complex) had a big grin on their faces.”
The three friends were mixing CDs for more than an hour in the morning as they played Christmas songs from Nat King Cole, Harry Connick Jr., Mariah Carey, Frank Sinatra, Charlie Brown and other artists.
Larch Hall Director Joelle Andrew said whether the loud music is a violation in the residence halls “depends on whether someone finds it offensive.”
However, she said she heard mostly positive comments about the holiday music.
Sorheim said the music received only two negative comments, which were from students who were trying to study.
“We got some phone calls saying people liked it and people saying they didn’t like it,” he said.
During a break in the music playing, people called in for requests, giving the holiday deejays reason to go out and buy additional Christmas CDs.
The music started again at 2 p.m., attracting a crowd outside during high-traffic times.
Wilson said they will continue playing the music over the next few days until Dead Week begins Sunday.
“We are definitely in the holiday spirit,” he said. “That’s what we’re all about.”
